by : Aurora Cristina J. Atilano, ITE Faculty

The ITE Program once again demonstrated excellent performance in the Mindanao Wide Quiz Bowl and Programming competitions held last December 4 and 5, 2009, respectively.

The Quiz Bowl Competition was held at the Holy Cross of Davao College gymnasium with participants coming from different schools in Mindanao. This was held in the morning of December 4, 2009 and was followed by the Mindanao Conference of Information Technology Students (MCITS). There were a total of 19 schools who participated in the event with questions coming from Philippine National IT Standards (PhilNits), the event sponsor. Christopher Pelayo and Jay Edward Dayday, both BSIT – 4 students, represented the ITE Program for the competition with Ms. Shenna Rhea Maranguit as their coach. UIC ended up as the second runner-up while USEP grabbed the top spot followed by ADDU.

The Programming Contest was held the next day, December 5, 2009 at the Ateneo de Davao University. With 26 teams coming from 18 schools, UIC team SMB solved 3 out of 8 problems and emerged as the champion. ADDU trailed behind solving 2 out of 8 followed by UP Mindanao, also solving 2 out of 8 problems. UIC was represented by two (2) teams. The first one was UIC-SMB, the same team who competed for the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest held last October, composed of Analie Maputi – BSCS 4, Ronald Borla – BSIT 4, and Karlo Jesus Sobiaco – BSIT 4, with coach Mr. Roy Manseras. The second team was BrodBroBru, composed of Darwin Medillo – BSIT 3SE, Kenneth John Rofuli – BSIT 3SE, and James Carl Bernardino – BSIT 3CN, with coach Ms. Mechelle Dimas.

The winners for both contests were each given a trophy, certificates, and a cash prize.

The third year BSIT Multimedia students also contributed their talents and skills to the MCITS by designing the tarpaulin which was used for the event.

The event was sponsored by the Council of Deans for IT Education in Region XI (CDITE-XI) together with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Region XI, and the Philippine Society of Information Technology Educators (PSITE-XI) Region XI. The ITE Program’s Mr. Exander Barrios and Mr. Eric John Emberda are CDITE’s President and PSITE’s PIO respectively.
